Corruption allegation triggers debate in council

Rotorua Mayor Steve Chadwick,

Two words in a Rotorua ratepayer group's manifesto have been raised at a final committee meeting of the Rotorua Lakes Council on Thursday.

The words ‘end corruption' appear in a post on the Rotorua District Residents and Ratepayers Facebook page.

During today's council meeting, Mayor Steve Chadwick questioned the post and says they 'impugned all councillors”.

She says the group's manifesto, which was posted on the site on July 22, is now out and about in the community.

Steve queried what RDRR meant by political council corruption, saying that the allegations concerned all councillors, including Peter Bentley and Raj Kumar – who are members of the RDRR group.

Peter wasn't at today's meeting when the matter was raised and Raj says, although he was aware of it, he was out of the country when the manifesto was posted.

Steve does not accept that there has been any corruption.

'I feel very strongly about that being on the public record on a manifesto.”

Deputy Mayor Dave Donaldson says if anyone had evidence of corruption the avenue of the Auditor General is available.

'That's where any allegations of corruption should be taken.”

The Auditor General had earlier investigated claims of corruption, but 'nothing had been found”.

Raj says he is not part of any corruption allegations.

'Look, I am not part of that, I did not accuse anybody.”

Steve says it might be a good idea if the manifesto was removed from the site.

'It's a manifesto; it's going out and around the community now that this council's councillors are corrupt.”

She says it's a conversation for the RDRR group to discuss.

'We need to be attracting people to stand for council, because we're doing the right thing for Rotorua and we're doing it together, even if we have differences.”
