Planning travel through the Waikato? Slow down

Drivers are being asked to be patient, slow down, and take their time driving through the Waikato region.

Waikato Police are experiencing a high number of calls about people who are driving well above the posted speed limit and putting themselves and other motorists at risk.

"If you’re travelling in our district over this time of year, you can expect to see a large amount of traffic congestion," says Waikato DCC Senior Sergeant Mark Pettigrew.

"Motorists who risk the safety of themselves and others can expect Police will follow through with the appropriate enforcement action so we can make it a safe and enjoyable summer."

Senior Sergeant Pettigrew says getting there alive and late is better than not arriving at all.

"We know traffic will be heavy across the highways due to restricted roading networks and increased traffic so we encourage all drivers to have patience, leave extra time to reach your destination and drive sober."

With everyone's safety in mind, Police ask that people are mindful of others and plan their trips in advance, expecting it to take a lot longer than usual to get home.
