UPDATE 2.44PM: State Highway 36 is open following a serious crash earlier today.
Emergency services were called to the crash, on the Tauranga-side of the TECT All Terrain Park, just after 9am.
A police spokesperson says there was a crash between a car and truck.
The highway was closed for several hours to allow the serious crash unit to examine the scene.
Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency reports the highway is now open.
UPDATE 9.31AM: Police are the scene of a serious crash on State Highway 36 (Pyes Pa Road), Oropi.
Emergency services were alerted to the truck vs car crash between Turner St and Whataroa Rd at around 8:52am.
An update on injuries will be provided when able, says a police spokesperson.
"A helicopter has been dispatched.
"The Serious Crash Unit has been notified."
The road is blocked and diversions are in place.
Diversions are as follows: Southbound: Use SH29, SH28, SH5 Northbound: Reverse direction.
"The road is closed between Takatimu Dr and Te Matai Rd. Te Matai Rd detour is not suitable for heavy vehicles. Expect delays and allow extra time for the detour."

A serious crash is being reported in State Highway 36, near the TECT All Terrain Park.
A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says they have just driven through the scene and it looks pretty bad.
"People should use an alternative route. Fire and police are at the scene.
"It looks like a car has been t-boned by a truck."
The crash is reported to be on the Tauranga-side of the TECT Park.

The NZTA says the highway is closed in both directions.
"Follow the directions from emergeny services on the scene."
