Last week the Rotorua Multicultural Council had its first meeting of the Multicultural Hospice Support Group.
'It was a historic day for the Rotorua Multicultural Council,” writes a spokesperson to the Council's Facebook page. 'We will be working with the clinical staff and the volunteers of Rotorua Community Hospice to support people living with a life-limiting illness as well as their whanau and friends.
'Members of the support group will help to inform Hospice about cultural differences between Kiwi ways of dealing with death and dying and the ways of their home countries.
'They will also act as ambassadors for Hospice, spreading the word to our large migrant community about the hugely valuable, free service provided by Hospice.”
'The Multi Cultural Council is doing so much wonderful work in our community,” says Rotorua Mayor Steve Chadwick. 'Thank you.”
'Such an amazing willingness was displayed at today's meeting by people from such a diversity of cultural backgrounds,” says a spokesperson for Rotorua Multicultural Council. 'They all just want to make Rotorua an even better place to settle.”
Special thanks and acknowledgement was given to the Community Organisation Grant Scheme for funding the council. Lily Joy from the Philippines, Hari from India and Serein from China are also members of the Council but were unable to attend the meeting.
Any groups not represented at the council or anyone wanting to volunteer as a member can email Valeria on rmc.valeria@gmail.com for a brochure with more information.
