Rotorua councillors reject ‘corruption’ claims

Rotorua Lakes councillors have railed against a Facebook post suggesting councillor corruption.

Councillor Karen Hunt has labelled the comment 'delusional”.

The words ‘end corruption' appear in a post on the Rotorua District Residents and Ratepayers Facebook page form July 22.

In a committee meeting on Thursday, Mayor Steve Chadwick raised her concerns about the allegations 'now out and about in the community”.

The RDRR's secretary and mayoral candidate Reynold Macpherson says the corruption referred 'is the corruption of project administration by poor priority setting, evaluation, budgeting and approval processes”.

He says the key issues are 'legacy, vanity and payback projects. The positive action to be taken is: prevent with council oversight of policy evaluation, budgeting and approval processes. End corruption”.

Responding to questions from Rotorua Now, councillor Charles Sturt, who is currently in Perth, says the police should be called in to investigate.

'I have seen no evidence (of corruption).”

Deputy mayor Dave Donaldson says the accuser should 'front up” with evidence of corruption.

'The more the group is ignored the better, but sometimes they just have to be challenged,” Dave says.

Retiring councillor Karen says that 'saying something again and again” does not make it true.

'Unfortunately, the ‘usual suspects' (at) RRDR have said councillors are corrupt.

'What a load of rubbish. We don't have an expense account; we don't have an office or staff or even a desk each.

'We have a shared in-tray for our mail, most of which is now electronic. There is no consumption of any food or beverages on the premises except for official council/community functions.”

Councillor Mark Gould says the comments surprised him.

He says he's not aware of any corruption within the council under either the previous mayor Kevin Winters or current mayor Steve Chadwick.

Fellow councillor Rob Kent says such comments should be ignored.
