WorkSafe investigators are meeting with police today as they look to investigate a crash which claimed the lives of four forestry workers in the Bay of Plenty.

Four people were killed in a crash with a van and a logging truck on Bonisch Road, Kaingaroa Forest, around 6.30am on Monday.

"Four people travelling in the van died at the scene. A fifth person from the vehicle received moderate injuries," says Bay of Plenty Road Policing Manager Inspector Brent Crowe.

"The truck driver was uninjured but shaken.

"Enquiries are ongoing to identify the deceased and determine the circumstances that resulted in the crash."

In a statement released this morning, WorkSafe says they have been notified of the Kaingaroa forest crash and is responding.

'Investigators will meet Police today to inform WorkSafe's next steps.

'Our thoughts are with families and communities affected by the tragedy.”

The investigation is expected to take several months to complete.

The four victims were all forestry workers, killed on a private road of the remote Kaingaroa Forest, owned by Timberlands Ltd.

"We can confirm that the people involved work for a contractor to Timberlands as valued members of our wider forestry team," chief executive Robert Green says in a statement to Stuff.

"Like everyone else in the area, we are shocked and saddened by what has happened. We pass on our condolences to the families, whanau and everyone affected by this."
