Sporting success for Rotorua on two counts were acknowledged in the city today.

On Saturday, New Zealand Maori beat Fiji 26-17 to avenge a rugby loss a week earlier before nearly.

Greater acclaim came some 30 hours later when the Silver Ferns won the World Netball title, beating Australia 52-51.

Probably unaware of news today each netballer would now receive $25,000 prize money, the Rotorua Lakes Council lauded both occasions.

It was significant because the Silver Ferns coach, Noeline Taurua, had lived many years in Rotorua as coach of the Magic side.

She had then transferred to Australia, before answering a call to coach the current national side.

Rotorua mayor Steve Chadwick says the rugby on Saturday, which drew nearly 14,000 spectators, was a raging success.

'I think we might be getting somewhere with our strategy to make this (the Rotorua International Stadium) the home of the Maori All Blacks,” says Steve.

'We need every body's support and it was phenomenal to see the community there.”

Discussion was raised under urgent business, which wasn't that urgent.

But it allowed councillor Charles Sturt to pitch in for those who worked behind the scenes.

He confirmed two council officers, Steve Watene and Rob Pitkethley, had helped raise $45,000 to allow free tickets and meals for all children from decile 5 and below areas. More than 150 volunteer workers were involved.

Charles praised those who did not seek headlines, while saying councillors sat back and took the kudos.

He had hoped Rotorua would now attract such second-tier games as Argentina or NZ University games. ‘It sends the right messages for us getting the Chiefs; they can come to Rotorua and know they will be looked after,” Charles said.

Steve says the Pasifika festival as part of the build-up made for an exciting weekend.

Referring to the exiting end of netball, Charles says he had to repair outside to pick his daffodils. 'I couldn't watch the last five minutes.”
