Heavy rain and cold southerlies are expected to flow across New Zealand this week according to MetService.

Snow is also expected in parts of southern and eastern South Island.

"A front preceded by a strengthening north to northwest flow and followed by cold southerlies, moves north across the South Island on Monday, then slowly over central New Zealand during Tuesday while a ridge develops across the lower South Island," says a MetService spokesperson.

"The front clears the east of the North Island on Wednesday, while a low approaches New Zealand from the north late Tuesday and moves southeast past the upper North Island on Wednesday and early Thursday."

MetService are forecasting that a series of troughs will affect the lower South Island on Wednesday and Thursday.

"The front and troughs are expected to bring periods of heavy rain at times to western and northern South Island, also southern and eastern North Island from Monday to Thursday," says a MetService spokesperson.

"There is low confidence of warning amounts of rain in Fiordland on Monday, and again on Wednesday and Thursday.

"On Monday, there is moderate confidence of warning amounts of rain in southern Westland, while confidence is low for central Westland."

Late Monday and Tuesday, MetService says there is low confidence of warning amounts of rain for Buller and also about Nelson, Marlborough, Wellington and Horowhenua Kapiti Coast on Tuesday.

"As the front moves north over eastern parts of the North Island and interacts with the low to
the north, there is low confidence of rainfall amounts reaching warning criteria in the eastern Bay of Plenty ranges, Gisborne and northern Hawke's Bay," says a MetService spokesperson.

"Cold southerlies following the front on Monday and Tuesday may bring snow down to 500 to 600 metres in parts of southern and eastern South Island, affecting the higher roads and passes. However, warning amounts of snow is not expected at this stage."
