Severe weather watch for heavy rain

The heaviest falls are likely in Great Barrier Island, Coromandel Peninsula, Bay of Plenty about and west of Whakatane.

Periods of heavy rain are being forecast for the Bay of Plenty.

The MetService has issued a severe weather watch for the region.

"An active front is forecast to bring periods of heavy rain to northern and western districts of New Zealand from tonight through into Saturday afternoon," says a spokesperson for the weather organisation.

"The heaviest falls are likely in Great Barrier Island, Coromandel Peninsula, Bay of Plenty about and west of Whakatane, western Tasman and the ranges of Westland.

"People are advised to stay up to date with forecasts in case any of these Watches are upgraded to a Warning, or new areas are added."

HEAVY RAIN WATCH

Area: Great Barrier Island, Coromandel Peninsula
Valid: 11 hours from 8pm Friday to 7am Saturday
Forecast: Periods of heavy rain, with thunderstorms possible.Rainfall accumulations may approach warning criteria, especially in the east.

Area: Bay of Plenty about and west of Whakatane, including Rotorua
Valid: 15 hours from 10pm Friday to 1pm Saturday
Forecast: Periods of heavy rain, with thunderstorms possible.Rainfall accumulations may approach warning criteria.

Area: Tasman west of Motueka
Valid: 11 hours from 10pm Friday to 9am Saturday
Forecast: Periods of heavy northerly rain, and amounts may approach warning criteria.

Area: The ranges of Westland about and south of Otira
Valid: 10 hours from 8pm Friday to 6am Saturday
Forecast: Periods of heavy rain, and amounts may approach warning criteria.
