Rain and southwest winds are expected to return to New Zealand.

MetService advises that a front preceded by strong, moist northwesterlies is forecast to move east across central and northern New Zealand on Monday.

This will be followed by west to southwest winds.

On Tuesday, a second front is forecast to move over the South Island, and then weaken as it moves over the North Island on Wednesday followed by a ridge of high pressure.

Rainfall amounts are expected to reach warning criteria in Westland, the headwaters of the Otago and Canterbury lakes and rivers, Buller, northwest Tasman, Nelson Lakes, the Bryant and Richmond Ranges including the Rai Valley, Marlborough Sounds, the Tararua Range and Mount Taranaki early on Monday.

'Also on Monday, there is noderate confidence of warning amounts of rain in northern Taranaki - away from the mountain - east across to Tongariro National Park, but moderate confidence for the ranges of eastern Bay of Plenty,” says a MetService spokesperson.

'On Tuesday, there is moderate confidence that rainfall accumulations will meet warning criteria in Westland south of Otira.

'In addition, there is high confidence that northwest gales could become severe about parts of Marlborough, Wellington, and southern Wairarapa on Monday, and moderate confidence over northern Wairarapa.

'There is low confidence of severe gale northwesterlies about the Canterbury High Country at first on Monday, and again later on Tuesday when that also extends southwards through exposed parts of Fiordland, Southland including Stewart Island, and the Queenstown Lakes Districts.”
