Sunny skies are on the forecast in the Bay of Plenty for the first official day of winter.

A ridge of high pressure is expected to push in over the country today with an easing south to southwesterly airflow.

WeatherWatch.co.nz says any morning showers clear for the western North Island then dry today, in the east showers don't clear till this evening.

'Canterbury sees remaining showers clear this afternoon, most other regions are dry apart from southern Fiordland which may see showers pick up this evening.

'Gusty southerly quarter winds through Cook Strait and for western and eastern coastal areas of the North Island gradually pull back today, first easing in the west then later on in the east.”

In the BOP, any lingering showers are expected to clear this morning, making way for a mostly sunny day, with southwesterly winds.

A high of between 15-18 is being forecast.
