Cooler night forecast for most of the North Island

It is looking mostly fine for the BOP today. File photo.

A spring surge of cooler air is spreading into the south and east of both islands today, dropping temperatures a little further and pushing showers northwards.

Only a few showers will make it into the very north of NZ today and it's a similar story in the south of the South Island, says WeatherWatch.co.nz

The weather organisation is forecasting a mix of sun and cloud in the Bay of Plenty.

"The chance of cloud and showers increases the further south you are. Highest chance for wet weather in Waikato.

"Overnight tonight that cooler air will bring a colder than average night to almost the entire North Island."

An area of rain with some locally heavier falls is today sliding across central NZ (the upper South Island and lower North Island), says WeatherWatch.co.nz

"The very upper North Island and very lower South Island are the driest today."

Some wet weather for Hawke's Bay again, this time only 2 to 15mm is expected (the further south the higher the totals).

"The Capital looks like to have the heaviest falls where maybe 40mm might accumulate today.

"Auckland's water storage dams won't be getting much from this event, other than a few showers."
