A man has been charged in relation to an assault on two police officers at the Rotorua Police Station.

Two police staff were taken to hospital following an incident at the Rotorua Police Station custody hub on October 22, with one officer left unconscious.

Staff were assessed at hospital and released the next day to recover at home, says Bay of Plenty district commander, Superintendent Andy McGregor.

'One of them took some time off and has returned to work and the other officer is still off work.

'We continue to support our officers in these special circumstances.”

'In an attempt to restrain the man, police staff deployed OC spray which was ineffective. They then utilised a taser and were eventually able to restrain the man," McGregor said at the time of the incident..

'This proved to be an extremely volatile situation for our staff, and we are incredibly fortunate their injuries were not more significant.”

The officers were injured when a man in custody became aggressive while being escorted to the toilet.

A 31-year-old man appeared in Rotorua District Court on October 23 charged with injuring with intent to injure and resisting police.

'Police work tirelessly to keep our communities safe and acts of violence like this against our officers are unacceptable.

'Police take the safety of its staff seriously, so we are working closely with the officers involved in this attack and will continue to do so as further enquiries are made into this incident.”
