Rain and strong winds coming early this week

The MetService report that a complex low pressure system is expected to move east across New Zealand on Monday and early Tuesday, bringing rain and strong winds to many parts of the
country.

"It is followed by disturbed southwesterlies from late Tuesday to Wednesday," says a MetService spokesperson. "Winds should turn northwesterly over the South Island late Thursday
as a trough approaches the South Island from the west.

"There is low confidence that unstable showery northwesterlies will boost rainfall accumulations enough to meet warning criteria about central parts of New Zealand from Buller to East Cape, including the Tararua Range on Monday as indicated on the chart below.

"Additionally, there is low confidence that northwest winds could rise to severe gale force in exposed parts of Northland late Monday and early Tuesday."
