Marguerita St road safety plans put to the public

One of the options is to close Marguerita St to through traffic.

Public consultation on a plan that could see Marguerita St closed to through traffic is now open.

Early last month, Rotorua Now reported that the Rotorua Lakes Council had agreed to consult the public over a plans to make Marguerita St safer for people living on the street after complaints from residents.

Consultation on the three options put forward by council is now open and ends on July 31.

In a statement, the council says it has been monitoring traffic movements along the street that is used by drivers as a connection between Te Ngae Rd and Fenton St.

"As part of its role in managing the local road network, council continuously monitors traffic load, types, behaviours, and impact on surrounding neighbourhoods.

"Following recent land development and feedback from residents regarding the mixed traffic use of Marguerita St, it is now the appropriate time to review the road use and function.

"Council has consulted with some of the residents who live on or near the street and is now extending that consultation to businesses in the area as well as the wider community," the statement reads.

The three options are:

  1. Status quo – keep the road as it is. Council would continue to monitor and enforce parking issues.
  2. Reduce traffic speed, volume of traffic and vehicle movements by installing traffic management features such as chicanes or narrowing the road at the residential end of Marguerita St.
  3. Remove the ability to travel through Marguerita St completely. This would mean closing the road by installing back-to-back cul-de-sacs at a midway point near Vetora.

People can submit their feedback via the council's online engagement hub Let's Talk/Korero Mai.
