Candidates confirmed for Rotorua and Waiariki

Six candidates have so far been confirmed to stand in the Rotorua electorate in September's general election with the possibility of two more being announced in the coming weeks.

In the Waiariki electorate, three people have been confirmed to contest the seat with less than three months before the nation goes to the polls.

As of today, incumbent National Party Rotorua MP Todd McClay, Labour Party candidate Claire Mahon, NZ First candidate Fletcher Tabuteau, Green Party candidate Kaya Sparke, New Conservative party candidate Alan Tane Solomon and ACT Party candidate Pete Kirkwood, have been confirmed to stand in the Rotorua electorate.

Candidates could also be confirmed from The Opportunities Party (TOP) and the Outdoors Party with the deadline for candidate confirmation being August 21.

In the Waiariki electorate, the Maori Party's Rawiri Waititi and Vision New Zealand Party leader Hannah Tamaki have been confirmed to take on incumbent Waiariki MP, Labour's Tamati Coffey.

Others could be added at a later date however, it is National Party policy not to stand candidates in any of the seven Maori electorates.

Voters on both the general role and Maori role get two votes, one for a candidate and one for a political party.

This year there will also be two referendums held. They will be on a separate voting document.

You will be able to vote on whether the recreational use of cannabis should become legal and on whether the End of Life Choice Act 2019 should come into force, giving people with a terminal illness the option of requesting assisted dying.

The general election will be held on Saturday, September 19 and only those who are enrolled to vote will get the have their say.
