SH1 closed following fatal crash near Cambridge

Update, 7.40am: One person has died following a serious crash on State Highway 1/Tirau Rd near the intersection of Hydro Rd, near Cambridge.

Another person is seriously injured. The Serious Crash Unit is at the scene.

NZTA advise that the road remains closed and could be for some time.

Diversions are in place.

There is a signposted detour in place using Shakespeare St, Browning St and Maungatautari Rd for southbound traffic. Northbound traffic should use the same route in reverse.

The Acting Waikato System Manager is encouraging motorists to avoid the area if possible.

'There are a number of events on in the region today, including a rowing regatta at Lake Karapiro. Please plan ahead, allow extra time and detour via Maungatautari Rd, which will take you around Lake Karapiro.”

"Heavy vehicles are asked to take additional care on the detour route, due to increased volumes of traffic.

'The Transport Agency thanks motorists for their patience.”

Earlier, 7.15am: Emergency services are at scene of a serious crash on State Highway 1/Tirau Rd near the intersection of Hydro Rd, near Cambridge.

Police were alerted to the two car crash at around 6.20am.

There are reports of serious injuries.

The road is closed and could be for some time while emergency services are at the scene.

Diversions are in place.

Motorists are asked to avoid the area if possible or expect delays.
