Two new scholarships currently being offered by the University of Waikato could help students who want the chance to study at university.

The Te Ara Hou Scholarship is now open and is intended for those wanting to study at the University of Waikato in 2020.

And in early 2020, the ‘Ko Te Tangata' School Leaver Scholarship will be opened for those wanting to study at the University of Waikato in 2021.

Professor Kay Weaver, Dean of the School of Graduate Research at the University of Waikato, says these scholarships provide further support to students who aspire to study at university.

"The University of Waikato is determined to support school leavers to attend university and to gain the tertiary qualifications they need to excel in their chosen career path,” she says.

'It's not cheap coming to university, and we know it is a big financial commitment for students and their families. These scholarships are designed to take some of the pain out of that situation and I really encourage secondary school students to apply for them.”

Te Ara Hou Scholarship provides support to recent school leavers who may not have planned to attend university, or who have experienced a change in their circumstances.

The scholarship, which is worth up to $3000, is given to applicants based on their NCEA Level 3 results.

The ‘Ko Te Tangata' School Leaver Scholarship, which is worth up to $5000, is based on the applicant's NCEA Level 2 results and strong commitment to community spirit.

Named ‘for the people', the ‘Ko Te Tangata' School Leaver Scholarship recognises the University's strong connection and commitment to the schools and communities within Aotearoa New Zealand.

Though both scholarships are targeted towards school leavers, people who have taken a gap-year, or who are transferring from another university, can apply provided they meet the scholarship criteria.

Students applying for either of these scholarship can choose to study in Hamilton and/or Tauranga.

If a student is eligible for free-fees during the year they're to receive the scholarship, then the scholarship can be credited to accommodation fees in one of the university's Halls of Residence, or credited towards the student's academic fees for the following year.
